The Rabbit Sunderland
If you ever find yourself wandering through the heart of Sunderland, there’s one spot you shouldn’t miss: The Rabbit Sunderland. Nestled right on 1-3 High St W, this vibrant venue isn't just a bar and restaurant - it’s a full-on experience. Whether you're hunting for killer cocktails, solid pub grub, or simply a place to soak up some live music and karaoke with friends, this spot ticks all the right boxes.
Let’s talk vibes first. The Rabbit Sunderland has an energy that’s hard to resist. With wheelchair-accessible entrances, seating, and toilets, it’s designed to be inclusive for everyone. The interior is modern but relaxed, with plenty of seating and a social buzz that keeps things lively without being overwhelming. You’ll often find people enjoying a pint or a spritz on the outdoor patio, especially when the sun makes a rare but welcome appearance in the northeast.
Now onto the menu - and yes, it’s a good one. The drink selection alone is worth the visit. You’ve got everything from locally loved Boddingtons and cider to a lineup of gin cocktails and signature espresso martinis. The Chocolate Orange Espresso Martini is a must-try if you’re after something indulgent and creative. More into wine or spirits? They’ve got you covered with a curated list that’s perfect for both casual sips and celebratory toasts.
When it comes to food, The Rabbit Sunderland strikes a balance between hearty comfort dishes and flavorful bar bites. The Chicken Sunday Roast, served with a fluffy Yorkshire pudding, is a local favorite for a reason - rich, filling, and soul-warming. Craving something a bit more handheld? The Yorkshire Wraps and Westminster Burger pack flavor into every bite, while the Fully Loaded Pizza Fries deliver exactly what the name promises: a cheesy, savory, carb-filled treat.
Vegans and vegetarians aren’t left out either. The Veggie Burger is a solid choice - not an afterthought, but a real contender among the other mains. And if you’re stopping by for lunch or just want a quick bite, their Gyro and Souvlaki options hit that perfect balance of flavor and freshness.
Need a little sweet to round things out? Cupcakes and rotating dessert specials seal the deal - because no night out is complete without something sugary on the side.
But The Rabbit Sunderland isn’t just about food and drink - it’s about atmosphere. They’ve leaned hard into being a go-to for live entertainment, offering regular karaoke nights, live music sets, and even sports screenings that draw in a crowd. There’s a distinct “local hangout” vibe here - but not in a cliquey way. Whether you're flying solo with a laptop and a coffee or rolling in with a group for dinner and dancing, the space feels welcoming.
Service is quick, too. Even on busy nights, the staff keeps things moving without making you feel rushed. You can tell they’ve built a team that knows how to blend professionalism with personality - the kind of people who’ll remember your favorite drink after a couple of visits.
If you’re someone who enjoys an all-in-one venue - one that serves good food, creative drinks, and a buzzing atmosphere without sacrificing comfort - The Rabbit Sunderland will probably earn a spot on your regular rotation. From Aperol Spritz afternoons to rum-fueled evenings and everything in between, it delivers the kind of experience that keeps people coming back, and telling their friends to come along too.

Very good place to eat and drink the sunday lunch was very nice i would recomend
I got in it and the floor was just washed. The smell of beer was so strong that I instantly thought they washed this floor with beer. Nothing else around me was opened and so I sat down. I ordered wine that came in a glass with someones lipstick on the side... I got a main that was a massive portion mainly potatos and vegetables, but thats okay you would not leave hungry and that is the only reason I give any stars at all. Will I go there again? No. Never.
Fantastic roast dinner. Had a good plate full of great food where every bite was tasty. Really well done to the chef. Everything was hot and cook to perfection
Lovely staff lovely food . We hadn't booked but we were fitted in . Will definitely go again .
This is a nicely renovated bar, especially the newer bit which used to be the restaurant section. Shows live sports, food (which I have never tried so can't comment), and has a DJ on in evenings. Friendly staff. Male toilet was a bit worn and in need of a clean on my visit. Pretty bog standard boring beer offering, they need to get on board with the craft beer and real ale upsurge.
